FOR TODAY – February 2, 2009
Outside my Window…Brilliantly blue sky, wispy clouds edged pink as the sun begins to set. A beautiful day, just perfect for celebrating Candlemas…
I am thinking…about what a rich deposit of faith the Church offers God’s people. The traditions, the comfort of continuity as we live our life according to the rhythms of the Church year…today’s Mass was exquisite. The blessing of candles, processing around the church in candlelight, the beauty of the Latin liturgy…we are soooo blessed to share in such loveliness…
I am thankful for…beauty. Written in the seasons, upon faces young and old, in the sky, in God’s Holy Word…beauty is never mundane, is always transcendent…
From the kitchen…mom fasts before Mass, the children ate a light breakfast. Home to feast! A feast of pancakes, in accordance with the traditional observation of Candlemas. Hot tea, cakes and cookies of all sorts, fresh strawberries (they remind us of our Lady’s heart…”pierced by a sword” as prophesied by Simeon). Tonight: rib roast, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, strawberries and whole wheat rolls.
In our school room…progress for readers and spellers! Still no verdict on Arthur…For today’s Feast Day: readings from Sacred Scripture, discussion about the Feast of the Purification, decorating blessed candles, coloring sheets and fellowship with our dear friends!
I am creating…Taking a bit of a break from crocheting and knitting. I may pull out the patterns and do a bit of sewing. Not quite sure…
I am going…to play a game with my 12yo son shortly…
I am wearing…brown micro-suede skirt, tights, cream turtleneck, navy fairisle cardigan, Birkenstocks, hair in a very cumbersome and messy twist!
I am reading…haven’t read much this week. The Bible…that’s about it!
I am hoping…that spring comes sooner rather than later!
I am hearing…the children are rather subdued, watching a movie in the livingroom. The jingling of bells on the back door tells me that Galahad has gone outside to work on his fort a bit longer…
Around the house…I’m contemplating taking each room completely apart, one corner at a time. Literally pulling every piece of furniture out of one corner, including curtains, pictures and photos, etc., and cleaning from top to bottom. I’ll let you know how that works out. Oh yes…and painting. Too many fingerprints…we need a little color to liven things up a bit!
One of my favorite things…candles and candlelight.
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week…order assessment tests, start looking at curriculum for next year…I’m not waiting as I have so often only to make impulsive decisions…also considering a short family trip…a memory-maker that isn’t too far from home nor too expensive. That’s a tall order for a family of nine!
Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you…

Have a blessed week!

I enjoyed your daybook today, Kimberly. There is so much more to today than the groundhog, isn’t there? 🙂
Have a wonderful week.

Oh what a lovely way to spend today! Thank you for sharing

It’s a bit sad that so many of the church’s feasts don’t suit us ‘down under”. Candles just don’t have the same allure when it’s hot and sunny!
Our church here totally ignores Candlemas day so I’m afraid we do too. It’s not even mentioned on my Catholic calendar!
So I really enjoyed seeing and reading of your celebration. What a blessing.

Awww, all of you looked so sweet at your Candlemas feast! How special and so precious. I miss attending Monday Mass. I hope to get there this Wednesday. This snowy weather has thrown me for a loop, at times!
Is there a calendar that has Catholic feast days listed, such as Candlemas? I didn’t know and would really like to keep on top of them. Thanks, if you do. 🙂
BTW, I’m going to be a guest on the “Seize the Day with Gus Lloyd” tomorrow morning (early! 7:30 AM!) on Sirius XM radio. I’m hoping I may get a recording since I don’t have Sirius and don’t know of many who do. Anyway. I’ll be sharing my “coming home” story with him. Seems Gus has a similar experience. (left Catholic church, attended non-denom church, then came back.) It should be fun!
Finally, I have a poll to the left on my blog. Scroll to the Feb. 1, 2009 entry and if you have time, listen to the audio teaching from Audio Sancto, “Holy Families Just Don’t Happen.” Read the entry and if you have time to vote, that would be great. I’m actually extremely interested in what you think of the message. My father and I had a pretty lively discussion afterward. I’ll share what I thought when I see you. 🙂
Blessings and big hugs to you!

Thank you all for so many kind and encouraging comments!
Whether you celebrate the feast or not, it is glorious, isn’t it, to be part of such rich tradition!
Mary Rose: The FSSP issues a traditional calendar every year. I use both calendars because there are recently canonized saints that don’t appear on the old calendar and there are traditional feast with dates that are in better accord with the liturgical year that don’t appear or have had the date changed, in the new calendar…
It sure would be helpful if our Holy Father would unify our calendars! Since the Extraordinary and Ordinary Form make up one Roman Rite, it seems it should be possible to issue a single calendar. Challenging, but possible…
Blessings to you and peace throughout your interview with Gus Lloyd…I’ll be sure to check out the poll on your blog!
Blessings,
Kimberly

I agree whole-heartedly on the calender issue! Since we attend both the new and the old Masses, it can be especially confusing. My Dominic was born on St. Dominic on the old calender and baptised on St. Dominic on the new calender!

Such a beautiful day–thanks for sharing! I am hoping that we can begin to celebrate the liturgical year more than we do right now over the next year or so. With 3/4 of us sick, Mass yesterday morning was out of the question. I’m sure everyone there would be thankful we didn’t come and spread the “fun”! Anyway, it sounds like it was wonderful. Thank you for describing it and letting me live vicariously a bit! Hopefully next year…
